With the latest trend of Early Access games it was fairly inevitable that one would fall victim to an early end of its development as opposed to the more likely scenario of never ever seeing a completed date. Spacebase DF-9 is the first large scale Early Access title abandoned before it’s completion and with that came a large volley of negative feedback.
Spacebase DF-9 currently sits with a Metacritic score of 49 gaining itself the much lamented red box on the rating aggregation site. As always, negative reviews on Metacritic come with great, level headed user reviews to boot. bound4earth gave it 0/10 and said:
I won’t waste too much time writing a clear, concise, or organized list because the game is atrocious and tarnishes Double Fine.
Game is not finished therefore atrocious. Geezer also awarded it a mighty 0/10 and asked the real questions…
Why do some developers like DF and EA see us gamers as stupid swine to chow down on what ever sht they throw in the trough? This game is nothing more than a abortion of what would of been a healthy happy baby.
That’s a first in game descriptions for me. Let’s get into the meat of Spacebase DF-9 and why I think it’s actually worth the shot.
1. It’s like the old Bullfrog games
You probably know by now that I can’t hide my undying love for old business sims like Theme Park, Theme Hospital and Dungeon Keeper (a dungeon is a business) so it shouldn’t be surprising that I can really get behind the overarching theme and gameplay of Spacebase DF-9. It’s also does something pretty rare for a space game…
2. It involves space and is not a 4x game or space shooter
It’s actually pretty sad that space themed games nowadays are pretty limited in scope. Mostly they’d see you taking the reigns of a ship or fleet while trundling through the various sections of the universe with Spacebase DF-9 though it’s a straight up builder. You manage the crew and their space station. Seems simple right…
3. It mixes things up
Most games would simple stick with their guns and particularly games of the builder genre but Spacebase DF-9 says “fuck that and fuck you cause we’re going to through some God damn aliens at your shitty little space station you dirty scumbag” or something to that effect. I think we can all agree that it’s admirable and helps add an extra layer to gameplay.
5. You can buy it for next to nothing
See what I did there…? I mean it’s now v0.6 to v1.0… Oh come on, that was classy as fuck!
Spacebase DF-9 is obtainable for as low as 80c and will probably drop beyond that. For 70% of a promised game it’s not a major investment of your funds but it’s definitely a solid investment of your time especially if you are a fan of the genre.
